Confidentiality and Exceptions:

All information relating to your file is confidential and will not be shared with anyone without your written permission.  Counsellors are required to maintain session notes. They are kept in a secure location and destroyed after seven years.

Exceptions to confidentiality:

  1. Where there is suspicion of abuse or neglect as described by provincial legislation to a child, senior, or other vulnerable person.
  2. Where there is imminent risk of harm to self or others.
  3. Where it is required by law, as in the case of a court order or subpoena.

Scope of Practice:

I will work within the scope of my training, which includes Somatic Experiencing Touch Work.  For some clients, supportive contact can assist with therapeutic outcomes of nervous system regulation.  SE Touch takes place seated or lying on a massage table, fully clothed and with consent for any touch.

Supervision and Record Access:

As part of professional practice, I occasionally consult or have counselling supervision to ensure I am providing high quality service to clients.  If I bring questions regarding our work together, no identifying information is shared.

I have a named Guardian of Records to assist with client support and transfer in the event of illness or injury necessitating a pause or closure of my private practice.

Email and Social Media:

I prioritize work/life balance and do not guarantee email response outside of my part-time work hours.  Please note that email is not an encrypted technology, so it is best to provide minimal sensitive information this way.  I will occasionally share resources after our appointments in this way with your permission.

I do not accept friend requests from clients or former clients on personal social media accounts.

Cancellation:

Please know I’ll be as flexible as I can regarding illness and emergencies.  Patterns of late cancellation and no-shows have a significant impact on my schedule and income, and my ability to serve all clients in a timely manner. I ask that you please provide 48 hours’ notice for cancellation or changes to your appointment. A first-time late cancellation or missed appointment will be charged a 50% session fee. A subsequent late cancellation or missed appointment will be charged at full fee.

You could also request a virtual appointment instead.

Fees and Payment:

Counselling fee is $160 per 60-minute session.  Payment methods include cash, check, or e-transfer to Kathleen@moving-through.ca.  You will be issued a receipt. It is the client’s responsibility to verify coverage with their insurance provider.

Direct-billing to some insurance providers is possible.

I reserve some sliding-scale spaces for those who have been underserved and/or harmed by oppressive social systems.

Complaints Process and Sexual Misconduct:

The Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists has a formal complaint process.  All clients will be provided with detailed information about this process and have ongoing opportunity to ask questions.

If you have a question, concern or complaint about my service to you as a counselling therapist, you may ask to review the code of ethics, which is available in my office.  You may also contact the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists: registrar@nscct.ca, www.nscct.ca/public, or 902-225-7531.

NSCCT provides a dedicated confidential reporting line to assist in reporting sexual misconduct by a Registered Counselling Therapist.  Please leave a voicemail and the Sexual Assault Complaint Navigator will contact you within 48 hours.  Call 902-579-8119.
